Measure Social-Emotional Growth, What? How Do I Do That?? What Do I Use?
The Kansas State Board of Education has identified 5 outcomes for measuring progress. One of the outcomes is to measure Social-Emotional Growth locally. So, what does this look like? What do schools need to do? What is available? Social-emotional-character growth indicators can include attitude and behavior, attendance and program completion, bullying prevention, character development, volunteerism, and school-based mental health. If schools are looking to change culture and sustain change in student skills then a systematic approach is needed. Come learn what that systematic approach would look like, and what components need to be used at the district, building, classroom, staff, and student levels. Learn about research-based commercial products, free products, home grown products, and everything else in between.

Kansans are demanding higher standards in academic skills, as well as employability and citizenship skills, and the need to move away from a "one-size-fits-all" system that relies exclusively on state assessments. The Courage to Teach and Lead
Self-care is never a selfish act - it is simply good stewardship of the only gift I have, the gift I was put on earth to offer others. Anytime we can listen to true self, and give it the care it requires, we do so not only for ourselves, but for the many others whose lives we touch." --Parker J Palmer

• Good teaching takes myriad forms but good teachers share one trait: they are authentically present in the classroom, deeply connected with their students and their subject. These connections are held in the teacher’s heart – the place where intellect, emotion and spirit emerge in the human self.

• Good teaching cannot be reduced to technique; good teaching comes from the identity and integrity of the teacher.

• Many of us became teachers for reasons of the heart, animated by a passion for some subject and for helping people learn. But many of us lose heart as the years of teaching go by. How can we take heart in teaching once more so that we can, as good teachers always do, give heart to our students?

This session will offer participants an opportunity to explore a unique kind of professional development, one that has proven to both renew and sustain educators in the important work they do!

The Courage to Teach and Lead
Mary Kaye Siebert, Ph.D. is the Director of Instruction for schools in Wamego, Kansas, and has served in this position for the past 14 years.  Prior to serving in this leadership position, she was a secondary social science teacher for 15 years, teaching sociology and psychology.  Mary Kaye has worked with teachers (at all levels) and leaders in many capacities, and her greatest joy is helping people uncover and grow their unique talents and dreams, and discover personal pathways to living and leading authentic lives; both personally and professionally.  A thread that runs through Mary Kaye’s life is the belief that both teaching and leading demand and deserve time for reflection; in essence, we teach and lead who we are, and without understanding the “who” that teaches or leads, we risk doing more harm than good. Mary Kaye is a Courage and Renewal® Facilitator, prepared for formation facilitation with Parker Palmer, and the Center for Courage & Renewal in 2012. Through her Courage & Renewal facilitation, she offers individuals the opportunity to take time-out from their busy lives, to reconnect who they are with the work they do. She loves to help people uncover and grow their unique talents and dreams, and discover personal pathways to living and leading authentic lives.  As the sole Courage & Renewal facilitator in Kansas, she has been offering retreat experiences for educators and leaders (partial, one day and multiple day retreats) for the past four years.  For more information on the Center for Courage & Renewal go to:  http://www.couragerenewal.org/

When you add parents into the mix, who may not understand the different kinds of tests their children take, there is lots of room for confusion around assessments. This presentation will provide teachers answers to parent’s questions regarding assessments used within their school districts.
